
Triggerfishes (Balistidae) of the Western Atlantic
The significant external characteristics of the six species of triggerfishes (family Balistidae) which occur in the western Atlantic (Balistes capriscus, B. vetula, Melichthys niger, Xanthichthys ringens, Canthidermis maculatus, and C. sufflamen) are discussed and compared.
Synonymies, illustrations, and range of each species, and a key to distinguish them are presented.
