Manufacturing industries are the most important contributors to prosperity in industrialized countries. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the customers' demands and to compete in the market. Enterprises must be able to react quickly to prevailing market conditions and to maximize the utilization of resources. Conventional approaches with hard automation are no longer able to meet these challenges, because they are very poor in information processing. The concept of virtual enterprises will help to master the challenges in future factories. The first part of the paper deals with global trends in manufacturing and describes in more detail the paradigm of virtual enterprises. The second part explains our system to support the modeling and simulation of virtual enterprises.
