Retrieval of wheat chlorophyll by an X-band scatterometer
This paper presents the experimental results of using a scattering coefficient to retrieve chlorophyll at X-band. The observations were carried out in India, during November 1997 to March 1998, by a ground-based X-band scatterometer. The wheat chlorophyll was obtained at a regular interval of 12 days. The scattering coefficient on wheat chlorophyll was measured as a function of the incidence angle and polarization. The scattering coefficient increased as the chlorophyll (chl) increased in the wheat. Chlorophyll is more sensitive for VV-polarization than HH-polarization. There is a significant relationship between chlorophyll and the polarimetric discrimination ratio (D) at an incidence angle of 40°. Using the obtained results, an empirical model for the scattering coefficient is proposed for accessing the chlorophyll of wheat at X-band.
