A methodology management approach to computerized process planning
Computerized process planning systems have so far been developed in two categories, as variant and generative. Due to the lack of generic methods for computerizing representation of intensive planning knowledge,
non-heuristic decision-making and creation of alternative process plans, both categories are currently applicationoriented and company-specific. A new approach to computerized process planning by using
design methodology management technology, in an attempt to achieve more flexibility and to provide more adaptable functions for a wider spectrum of applications, is proposed. First the methodology management
concept is described, then the derived new approach to process planning and the prototype system is presented. It is shown how alternative process plans are generated, and how flexible and adaptable planning
functions are achieved. Finally, useful conclusions are drawn and speculations on future work are made.
