Fast Colorimetric Determination of Aqueous Mercaptans with Microwave-Assisted Derivatization

A microwave-assisted derivatization protocol for rapid colorimetric-determination of aqueous mercaptans is described. The color-developing reaction of mercaptans with acidic N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediaminedihydrochloride was accelerated by microwave irradiation. With 2-mercaptoethanol as the model species, optimum conditions for microwave-assisted color-developing were studied. Results indicated that with the proposed method, the time required to achieve the color-developing is only 15 s that is much shorter than 50 min of the conventional method; a 1.4-M hydrochloric acid (HCl) is enough to assist the color-developing reaction which is only 8-folds of 11.7 M used in conventional method; the detection sensitivity is also increased to 235% of the conventional method. An authentic water sample from Chung-Hsing Lake was tested. The proposed method provided a very fast, safe, and highly sensitive procedure to determine aqueous mercaptans.
