Synthesis and Characterization of a Cadmium Chloride Complex with an N5O3 Cryptand

A complex of cadmium chloride with an N5O3 cryptand L (1,4,13,16,27-pentaaza-6,9:18,21:29,32-tribenzo-10,22,33-trioxa-bicyclopentatriacontane), [CdL(H2O)][CdCl4]c˙0.5H2O (1), was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and NMR studies. The colourless crystals are orthorhombic, space group Pna2l with a = 25.2257(4), b = 16.5098(3), c = 9.9615(1) Å, Z = 4, D c = 1.526 g cm−3 and R = 0.0312. The Cadmium atoms in [CdL(H2O)]2+ and in [CdCl4]2− have trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral coordination spheres, respectively. The conformation of the ligand in the title compound is endo-endo and the distance between the two bridgehead nitrogen atoms in L is 10.023(7) Å.
