Desulfurization methods have been extensively investigated to produce clean fuel from coal. However, most methods remove either inorganic or organic sulfur. To further remove the total sulfur, this study applied the electrolysis process of coal in aqueous sodium chloride and sodium
hydroxide (NaOH) solutions. The changes of sulfur forms were confirmed by quantitative analysis with a decrease of 38.74%. Furthermore, the electrolysis process had no effects on the main structure of coal with an increase of 8.12% of the calorific value.
