ONE OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES facing the manager of a neonatal intensive care unit is to retain qualified professional nurses. During the current national nursing shortage, most organizations are having difficulty providing adequate professional staffing. Studies of organizations that have received the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet designation illuminate leadership and environmental characteristics that help attract and retain good nurses.1–4 By incorporating these characteristics into the NICU, the manager can create an environment that will serve as a "magnet" to professional nurses.
