At NHMRC we are excited by the huge potential benefits of the research we fund and by the opportunities we have to ensure Australians have access to evidence-based, authoritative health advice. We create pathways to a healthier future through our research funding, our health guidelines and the ethical standards we set and uphold. As the nation's leading expert body in health and medical research, we set ourselves high standards of integrity and scientific rigour, and see ourselves as championing the pursuit of better health outcomes for all Australians. We need research that meets the needs of the community and we need brilliant, committed, passionate researchers to consider what will have the biggest impact in the longer term. We've been undertaking a major reform of our research grant programme to reduce these pressures and reduce the driver for people to put in more and more applications. We hope to develop a more sustainable balance between numbers of applications and grants we can fund. We want the new grant programme to foster more creative research by removing those pressures and conservatism.
