Edge sharing BO4 tetrahedra as a new structural feature in borate structures

High pressure/high temperature conditions are used to synthesise new rare earth oxoborates Ln4B6O15 (Ln=Dy, Ho; 8·0 GPa, 1000°C) and α-Ln2B4O9 (Ln=Sm–Ho; 10·0 GPa, 1150°C) in a Walker-type multianvil apparatus. These new compositions, which till now were unattainable under normal pressure conditions, exhibit the new structural motif of edge sharing BO4 tetrahedra, leading to a structural extension of oxoborate chemistry.
