Morphotectonic evolution of the Piedmont Zone of the west Ganga Plain, India
Geomorphic and tectonic features in a part of the Piedmont Zone (PZ) of the west Ganga Plain have been identified and mapped on the basis of various terrain characteristics and sedimentological attributes using Digital Terrain Models, remote sensing data and fieldwork. The PZ is composed of alluvia of many rivers and subordinately of scree. The Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) defines the structural boundary of the basin. It is transversely offset by the Khoh River Fault (KRF) and Sukh Rao Fault (SRF), which may be related to a basement spur of the basin. The middle part of the area is longitudinally traversed by the blind Najibabad Fault (NF). These tectonic features have a profound control on the development and disposition of geomorphic features in the area. However, the Holocene climatic fluctuations have affected the sedimentation in the basin, causing a reduction in the transversal expansion of the PZ. Presently, the fluvial sediments are not depositing on the proximal PZ surface because the streams are deeply entrenched into it. On the distal PZ surface, however, channel shifting and overbank flows contribute to fluvial sedimentation.
