Cretaceous basins of Central Europe have recorded a number of global and regional processes such as long-term rise in global sea level, peak greenhouse climate and widespread Late Cretaceous tectonic inversion. Considerable recent advances in integrated stratigraphic dating now allow for major improvements in understanding of the sedimentary records in these basins. This special issue presents several case studies that document some aspects of the scientific advances of the last years, temporally focussing on the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Coniacian). Palaeogeographically, the case studies are centred on basins situated in the periphery of the Mid-European Island, comprising the Münsterland, Lower Saxony, Saxo-Bohemian and Danubian Cretaceous basins. The thematic spread includes integrated biostratigraphy, genetic and depositional sequence stratigraphy, facies analyses, detailed lithostratigraphical correlations of well-logs and outcrops as well as dating of detrital zircons.

Kreide-Becken in Zentraleuropa haben eine ganze Reihe von globalen und regionalen Prozessen wie beispielsweise den langfristigen Anstieg des globalen Meeresspiegels und das Super-Treibhausklima der Kreidezeit sowie eine weitverbreitete intra-kratonale tektonische Inversionphase aufgezeichnet. Erhebliche Fortschritte in der integrierten stratigrafischen Datierung erlauben jetzt wesentliche Verbesserungen im Verständnis des sedimentären Berichtes dieser Sedimentbecken. Diese Sonderausgabe präsentiert mehrere Fallstudien, die einige Aspekte dieser wissenschaftlichen Fortschritte der letzten Jahre mit zeitlichem Schwerpunkt auf der frühen Oberkreide (Cenomanium–Coniacium) dokumentieren. Paläogeografisch sind die Fallstudien auf Becken in der Peripherie der Mitteleuropäischen Insel zentriert (Münsterländer, Niedersächsisches, Sächsisch-böhmisches und Danubisches Kreide-Becken). Die thematische Bandbreite umfasst integrierte Biostratigrafie, genetische und klassische Sequenzstratigrafie, Faziesanalysen, detaillierte lithostratigrafische Korrelationen von Bohrprofilen und Aufschlüssen sowie die Datierung detritischer Zirkone.
