Cymbella fontinalis, a new diatom species in the C. neocistula complex, is described from springs, spring seeps and spring creeks in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, U.S.A.Similarities with C. neocistula and others in this group include well-developed apical pore fields, radiate striae, strongly reverse-lateral proximal raphe ends, and two to several stigmata that are separate and distinct from areolae of the ventral striae. Cymbella fontinalis is most often found among aquatic macrophytes, bryophytes and other cryptogams. Living cells of C. fontinalis were observed to be unattached and weakly motile in an apex-first direction. Weighted averages of selected chemical and physical variables indicate that the new species is found in cool alkaline waters with moderate conductivity.
