The occurrence of litter Myxomycetes at different elevations in Mt. Arayat National Park, Pampanga, Philippines

There is a general lack of understanding of the ecology of myxomycetes in tropical rainforests, particularly those found in the Philippines. The research described herein was carried out to assess the occurrence and distribution of litter myxomycetes at different elevations in Mt. Arayat National Park, Pampanga, Philippines. Samples of leaf litter and twigs on the ground were collected from study sites located at five different elevations (200, 315, 500, 700, and 800 masl) along two transects on Mt. Arayat. In each study site, samples were collected randomly from within a 10 m × 10 m plot. These samples were taken back to the laboratory and used to prepare 1200 moist chamber cultures (240 cultures for each elevation). The cultures yielded a total of 30 species of myxomycetes representing 13 genera. The highest taxonomic diversity was recorded for study sites at the highest elevations (i.e., 700–800 masl), while the highest species diversity was observed at 700 masl.
