Fuscutata aurea, a new species in the Glomeromycetes from cassava and maize fields in the Atlantic rainforest zone of Northeastern Brazil

A new species of the arbuscular mycorrhiza forming Glomeromycetes, Fuscutata aurea, is reported from cassava and maize fields in the tropical rainforest zone in Itambé (Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil). It forms bright yellow to golden yellow glomerospores on yellowish-white to yellow sporogenous cells. Its spores, ornamented with tiny tubercles on surface, are 160–250 (–310) μm in diameter and have three walls: a three-layered outer, a bi-layered middle and a three-layered inner wall. A yellow brown, violin-shaped to oval, bi-lobed germination shield is formed on the surface of the inner wall. Analyses of the partial LSU rRNA sequences place the new species in the monophyletic Fuscutata clade adjacent to F. heterogama. Also morphologically, F. aurea is most similar to F. heterogama but can be distinguished from the latter species by the characteristic yellow to golden color of the outer spore wall.
