Microalgae Culture Collection of Ukraine (IBASU-A)
This paper introduces the culture collection of microalgae of the Department of Phycology at the Kholodny Institute of Botany, Academy of Science of Ukraine (IBASU-A), which contains over 430 strains of halophilic and freshwater green algae. The structure of the collection, its history and development are described. The nucleus of the IBASU-A collection is formed by 150 strains of the halophilic flagellate Dunaliella that were isolated in the 1960-70s for research and potential use in biotechnology. In 1996, IBASU-A expanded with the addition of over 270 strains of freshwater green algae belonging to the classes Chlorophyceae (Chlamydomonadales, Chlorococcales, Sphaeropleales), Trebouxiophyceae (Chlorellales, Trebouxiales) and Charophyceae (Klebsormidiales). Most IBASU-A cultures are maintained in unialgal (xenic) status to study the satellite bacteria associated with different algal species. Some Acutodesmus, Chlorella, Desmodesmus and Scenedesmus strains are axenic clones (over 50 cultures), and they are used for comparative morphological investigations, as well as for aquatic toxicology studies. IBASU-A also functions as a depository for valuable strains that may be lost on completion of research projects. Future efforts will focus on increasing the diversity of algae in the IBASU-A collection, with a main emphasis on rare and endangered Ukrainian species.
