Studies on Acaulopage dichotoma and A. tetraceros (Zoopagales, Zygomycota) capturing amoebae

When growing immersed in water, the nonseptate mycelium of Acaulopage dichotoma Drechsler captured amoebae in a wet terrestrial environment, and it produced aerial conidia from floating hyphae.After liberation, the majority of conidia floated on the surface of the water; however a few were erect. When the water was stirred, the floating conidia became prostrate and none became erect again.

When a small portion of the mycelium was transferred onto a fresh water agar plate with amoebae, new mycelium developed, capturing animals all along the hyphae. Conidia were initially unbranched and clavate, later they became bifurcated distally.Conidia always germinated at the basal end 3 h after being placed on fresh water agar plates. Zygospores, produced in aged cultures, were found for the first time in this species. The morphological characteristics of Acaulopage tetraceros Drechsler were similar to those of A. dichotoma, except that conidia were not distally bifurcate.
