Geological context and age of the Štramberk-type limestones from the Polish Outer Carpathians: an overview

The Štramberk-type limestones occur in the Polish Outer Carpathians mainly as pebbles to boulders (so called exotics). Similarly to the Štramberk Limestone in Moravia (Czech Republic), they have long been attributed to the Tithonian. However, it has been evidenced by means of ammonites and calpionellids that they are also in part of the Early Berriasian age. Development of reefs dominated during the Tithonian. Benthic foraminifera from exotics indicate that shallow-water sedimentation on the northern Tethyan margin continued locally until the Valanginian, what is supported by biostratigraphic data from some boreholes in the Carpathian Foredeep. The lack of index fossils in most of exotics hinders dating, thus the term Štramberk-type limestones does not imply the exact age. It is justified, however, to refer it to a wide spectrum of the “lost” carbonate platform facies deposited in the Late Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous, mainly in the Tithonian and Early Berriasian.
