Altere und eigene neue Gelandebeobachtungen deuten darauf hin, daB die praexistierende lithospharische Schwachezone im Bereich des Oberrhein-Grabens auf einen t1ach WNW- bis W-einfallenden spatvariszischen Abschiebungskomplex zutiickgeht. Die Hinweise in Form W-fallender duktiler Abscherhorizonte finden sich im variszischen Sockel ostlich des Rheins. Diese lithospharische Scherzone sorgte schon urn 325 Ma in diesem Bereich flir eine Ausdunnung der Kruste bzw. der Lithosphare, die auch in der folgenden geologischen Entwicklung des Gebietes als mechanische Schwachezone erhalten blieb.
