n Westerse interpretasie van die genius loci van Mgungundlovu
Mgungundlovu was the military capital of Dingane, king of the Zulu between 1829 and 1838. Comtemporary visitors (traders, missionaries and Voortrekkers) to the complex left much information about the layout of the complex and activities of the inhabitants. Archaeological research however
contributed largely to the iIIucidation of these historical sources and revealed some new facts. Architecture, which has a close link with the total living and natural environment, leads to a specific experience of a building or building complex. The genius loci of Mgungundlvou is being interpreted
according to certain Western identified formal elements.
