Dimensions of a modern Landeskunde, with suggestions for teaching practice Landeskunde - 'Cultural Studies' or 'Area Studies' - is often neglected in the teaching of German at university level. Some students feel reminded of school rote learning of events, dates, and facts. Alternatively, Landeskunde is being reduced to an appendix of foreign language instruction which transmits its contents through the texts studied. Does an independent Landeskunde make sense at international universities featuring German Studies? I would like to answer this question in the affirmative. On the basis of my experience as a teacher of 'German culture' at a South African university, I would like to make a case for a modern Landeskunde approach.
