Should / may / must Muslim girls learn to swim. An intercultural debate in the media of German Switzerland. The topic and occasion of this contribution is a committed discussion about contradictory decisions about the controversial dispensation of minor Muslim girls from swimming tuition on the basis of religious considerations. The discussion is part of a comprehensive debate about the reporting on Islam in German-language media, which is portrayed quickly, and then focused on German Switzerland. An argumentative intermediate step problematises the relationship between media culture and intercultural conflict. Then the corpus of the study is presented (six newspapers), and the method of the random sample is explained, with which selected texts which are related to the topic are analyzed. The results of the analysis are summarized in an overview and then finally debated critically, so that the deeper causes of the alienation between parts of the Muslim minority and its resident society which has been diagnosed superficially can be more clearly perceived in its public (mass media) mirror.
