Marlen Haushofer (1920-1970), a provincial Austrian housewife, wrote stories and novels whose significance has not been fully appreciated. They contain early feminist messages on oppression of women in marriage and postwar society. Her heroines also reflect Existentialist philosophy in their confrontations with basic aspects of human existence.
