The design of fiction and the fiction of design: revisiting the idea of literature through the study of design
The article proposes that scholars rethink the idea of literature by addressing texts as designed products. It focuses on how today designers emphasize product experience in ways that parallel how scholars regard literary works of fiction; namely, the qualities of users' and readers'
interactions with products and texts matter more than the qualities of the products and texts themselves. The article explores how designers' and scholars' value judgements depend on their attitudes to intention and genre, making these considerations crucial as to how they perceive and assess
the qualities of the experiences offered by texts and products alike.
