This article, inspired by Roland Barthes' account of his search for a just photograph of his mother (in Camera Lucida) and engaging with the author's own experience as a photographer, ethnographer and grieving son, makes the case for a photographic practice that is empathetic, reflexive, dialogic and critically engaged. It explores issues of photographic practice and cultural theory through text and images, including photographs and life stories from a portraiture project on mothers and daughters from diverse ethnic backgrounds who live in Wales.
