As we have commented on earlier, the interaction between economy and culture is central in our interpretation of circulation economics. Furthermore all forms of economic activity are linked to, and depend on, the cultural context. In the previous chapter we discussed the interaction between economy and nature based upon the recently established discipline ‘ecological economics.’

In this chapter we look at the interplay between economic action and the cultural context . As in the previous chapter we link the discussion to research in an interdisciplinary fi eld of science. To contextualize research within business administration concerning ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ (CSR), we discuss philosophical literature dealing with topics like ‘freedom’, ‘value assessments’, and ‘responsibility.’ In this perspective CSR crosses some of the basic prerequisites in ‘mainstream’ economic theories, and represents a new approach to many central issues. Researchers in CSR have, during the past few years, developed research programs, educational facilities and periodicals with diff erent focus. We argue that CSR cannot be reduced to another tool of competition. Culture in our interpretation represents an inherent value in the same way as nature did in the preceding chapter.
