The architect's office GASA (Norwegian: Group of Cooperating Architects) has worked for 25 years with environmental issues in the context of architecture. In 1980 Espen Dahl and Per Monsen from GASA, in cooperation with Dag Borgen from the Dairy building offi ce, designed a new building for Indre Østfold Dairy. The project received international attention due to its way of integrating new principles for the utilization of solar energy in a modern building of high architectural quality. The southern wall has a double glass facade enabling the heating of air for ventilation. Blinds between the glass walls facilitate sun shading when the heat is unwanted. The remaining facades are more closed. There is a direct interaction between the character of the place and the architecture of the building. To understand this dialog is crucial for the development of environment-friendly building procedures.
