In this chapter we take a closer look at the interaction between economy and nature, mainly based on our research in the fi eld of ecological economics. But at the same time, we link our presentation to methods used in traditional economic thinking relating to the appreciation of nature.

Costanza, Daly and Bartholomew defi ne ecological economics as ‘a new fi eld of study that addresses the relationships between ecosystems and economic systems in the broadest sense.’ Th ey go on to propose that ‘these relationships are central to many of humanity's current problems and to building a sustainable future’ (Costanza 1991, p.3).
