The Future in Our Hands (FIOH) is a non-governmental organization whose aim is to create more fair distribution globally and to foster long-term environmental responsibility. FIOH was started by the enthusiast Erik Dammann in 1974. The core message is that the consumption of resources in rich countries must be reduced in order to protect the environment and to give poor countries an opportunity to develop. FIOH today has 20,000 members and 17 local groups. The organization acts independently of authorities and businesses, and the main strategy is to infl uence politicians and the general public by providing well-founded criticism and constructive proposals.
