Open Access Atomwende?

This article is Open Access under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY licence.

Nuclear energy remains controversial in society. On the one hand, it is once again being traded as a technology of the future for supposedly climate-friendly and resource conserving power generation. On the other hand, the final storage of nuclear waste has not yet been clarified. The concept of the “nuclear turnaround” ‐ analogous to the Energiewende (“energy turnaround”) ‐ sums up this struggle. The phase out of the commercial use of nuclear energy and a good waste management policy are necessary conditions for the Energiewende and the socio-ecological transformation in Germany.

Keywords: Energiewende; energy security; final disposal; high-level nuclear waste; nuclear power; nuclear waste repository
