The author describes his Vertical Innovation™ process, which has succeeded in commercializing inventions more than 90% of the time. He outlines the importance of an innovation center that encourages daily interaction and is focused around inspiring a vertically integrated procedure, which includes invention vetting, customer insights, design concepts, feasibility prototypes, engineering layouts, production prototypes, design-for-manufacturing, factory sourcing, branding, and market launch, all in one concentrated location. He describes projects that have benefited from this process and that have yielded combined revenues of over $50 billion for partner-client companies and more than 1,200 commercialized patents. The author is a trustee of Cleveland Clinic and co-president of Nottingham Spirk, a leading product innovation company. He has licensed hundreds of inventions to more than 30 companies and is co-founder of more than 40 venture companies, many of which have been acquired by major corporations, such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Schick, and Medtronic.
