Charts and evaluates changes to The Guardian/Observer library over the period 1983 ± 1998. Examines these developments in the light of wider changes to the newspaper industry as a whole. Discusses the early arrival and impact of FT Profile; the setting up of the Association of
UK Media Librarians; the increasing professionalism of newspaper library staff; computer assisted reporting (CAR), changes in service provision and a consequent change of name for the library, and the role of the Internet and intranet in the work of the unit. Identifies areas of future change.
