Contribution of male inbreds to cold germination in maize hybrids

Cold stress germination (CG) of maize is an increasingly important trait as planting is tending to be carried out earlier in the season. To better understand how parent lines contribute to hybrid CG, females with poor per se CG were paired with males of varying per se CG. Two 103 RM females were crossed with four males, two 113 RM females were crossed with another set of four males, and one 113 RM white female was crossed with four males. Within these groups, males differentially affected hybrid CG showing a significant (P < 0.05) contribution. Additionally the contributions by the males were consistent with each of the females. The per se male CG was not predictive of hybrid CG. Based on these results, breeders selecting parents to produce hybrids with high CG should consider the impact by the males but cannot rely on predictive ability of per se male CG.
