Using sodium chloride saturated solution to standardize accelerated aging test for wheat seeds

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of accelerated aging of wheat seeds either over a saturated solution of sodium chloride or over water. Repeatability of the two methods was evaluated in one laboratory and evaluation of their reproducibility was completed with a second laboratory. The NaCl accelerated aging method showed better repeatability and reproducibility than the water accelerated aging method. Lack of reproducibility of the water method was related to the variability in seed moisture content following aging. In the case of NaCl method, all the seed moisture contents after aging ranged between only 13.7% to 14.7%. The NaCl method gave same results when applied using different aging equipment and seed sample size, and initial seed moisture content had no effect on either final seed moisture content or germination of aged seeds.
