It is also a challenge to mitigate by noise barrier or enclosure due to the size and frequent location changes of the breaker and piling rig. Tuned mass damper (TMD) (patent pending) has been developed to dissipate vibration energy, hence to reduce noise radiation. It can be tuned to a specific damping frequency by adjusting the stiffness parameters of the resilient layer and oscillation mass. It uses magnetic coupling for easy installation and detachment. The TMD is designed to attach on the casing of breaker head and percussive H-beam pile. Noise measurements for breaker were conducted with the dominant frequency of ~2500Hz. While the result for percussive piling shows the sound power level is normally in a range of 122 to 130 dB(A) with tonal ringing noise of 400Hz, 800Hz and 1600Hz. FEA results for a H-beam pile shows "flange twisting" mode shape at 396Hz, 790Hz and 1585 Hz that matched the measured tonal ringing noise. Site trial for both TMD has been conducted with the breaker TMD is tuned from ~600Hz to 2500Hz and the pile TMD is tuned from ~315 Hz to ~1600 Hz. On-site trial results showed 2-3 dB(A) could be achieved for both cases.", }
