Lingnan region is located in the tropical zone, south subtropical zone and middle subtropical zone, with unique geographical and ecological characteristics that prompts the growth of animals and plants. And the region has become a natural resource conservatory of medical plants with diversified germ plasm and optimal growing environment. based on statistics, there are over 4,500 kinds of medicinal resources in the Lingnan region, accounted for 36% of the medicinal resources nationwide. Among the medicinal resources in Lingnan, 4,000 kinds are of terrestrial plants. Lingnan region boasts a wide range of herbal medicine resources. The specialty of Southern medicine, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical are of high quality. Medicinal ingredients like Spring Amomum, Patchouli, Morinda, Citrus grandis, Galangal, Alpinia vera, Polygonum multiflorum, Sophora, Snowbellleaf tickclover Herb, Suberect Spatholobus Stem, betel nuts are of obvious geographical characteristics and advantages. Besides, Lingnan region has successfully introduced and domesticated more than 30 plants from South and Southeastern Asia, including cardamom, cloves, South cinnamon, strychnine, chaulmoogra, sandalwood, Indian Garcinia, and etc. Myrobalan, cloud wood, benzoin, Homalomena other varieties had also been successful introduced and domesticated. Guangdong province, as one of the major distribution centers of Chinese herbal medicines, is rich in medicinal herbs resources. According to the census of Chinese herbal medicine resources, Guangdong province, with Hainan included at the time, boasts a total of 2,645 kinds of Chinese herbal medicinal resources, among which 2,500 are medicinal plants, 120 medicinal animals and 25 medicinal minerals. According to statistics, Guangdong province's Dinghushan National Nature Conservation Area has 193 families 677 genera and 1,077 species of medicinal plants, and Luofoshan has 1,600 species of medicinal plants. And the number of the home-grown herbs with annual production and raw medicinal herbs reserves of more than 100 tonnes, is about 194. Guangdong exports more than 100 species of medicinal materials (wild varieties accounts for 80%), and sells 84 species of medicinal materials to other provinces (regions).

Lingnan Herb (1932) has documented the application and analysis of over 400 herbal types. As this book is of significant practical use, it has promoted the usage of Lingnan herbs, its advantages in the good effects on local diseases, rich resources and low cost. In modern times, unprocessed herbal medicines are widely and skillfully utilized by many medical practitioners and these medicines are working effectively thanks to the gathering and recording herbal medicine in book form by Lingnan herbalists such as Xiao Budan.
