Plate bells are musical instruments used as surrogates for large church bells in the pitch range C … C. In comparison with tubular bells, the imitation of the bell sound is good. This can be attributed to the more distinct strike sound of plate bells. The sound spectrum of a plate bell was measured and illustrated with computer-generated vibration patterns with respect to the acoustic pressure amplitudes. The strong partials, which also include a series of octaves, derive from the partial groups (, 0) and (, 2).The dimensions and weight of 95 tuned plates were ascertained and compared with the data of bells in terms of dependence on the pitch. It is shown that the ratios of length/width of rectangular plates finely tuned by ear lie between 1.35 and 1.63, and include the theoretical value √2.Shape frequency calculations with a finite element method yield an ideal value of / = 1.46 which agrees with the arithmetical mean value of the measurements. In a clang structure diagram it is demonstrated that the pitches of the strike note and prime coincide, and important partials form an inner harmony typical of bells. This is dependent on the Poisson's ratio of the material.

Plattenglocken sind Musikinstrumente, die als Surrogate großer Kirchenglocken im Tonhöhenbereich C…c" verwendet werden. Im Vergleich mit Röhrenglocken ist die Nachbildung des Glockenklanges gut. Dies wird auf den besser ausgeprägten Schlagklang der Plattenglocken zurückgeführt.

Das Klangspektrum einer Plattenglocke wurde gemessen und wird bezüglich der Schalldruckamplituden mit computergraphisch erzeugten Klangfiguren erläutert. Die starken Teiltöne, zu denen auch eine Oktavreihe gehört, entstammen den Schwingungsformgruppen (m, 0) und (m, 2).

Die Abmessungen und Gewichte von 95 gestimmten Platten wurden ermittelt und in Abhängigkeit von der Tonhöhe mit Glockendaten verglichen. Es zeigt sich, daß die durch gehörmaßige Feinstimmung eingestellten Längen-Breitenverhältnisse L/B der Rechteckplatten zwischen 1,35 und 1,63 liegen und den theoretischen Wert √2 einschließen.

Form-Klang-Rechnungen mittels FEM ergeben einen Idealwert von L/B = 1,46, der mit dem arithmetischen Mittelwert der Messungen übereinstimmt. In einem Klangstruktur-Diagramm hierfür wird gezeigt, daß die Schlagton- und Primtonhöhe zusammenfallen und wichtige Teiltöne eine glockentypische Innenharmonie bilden. Diese ist von der Querkontraktionszahl des Materials abhängig.
