Abnormal Snoek Peak in Steel

The change in longitudinal ultrasonic absorption is measured in steel as a function of temperature, in the frequency range 3.0…9.0 MHz. Well identified peaks are observed whose characteristics are dependent on the impurity content of the material as well as its heat treatment. Discussion of the results in view of the models put forward to explain the effect is given and leads to the conclusion that the peaks, observed here, have the abnormal Snoek peak nature.


Die Änderung der longitudinalen Ultraschallabsorption als Funktion der Temperatur wurde für Stahl im Frequenzbereich 3,0…9.0 MHz gemessen. Es wurden gut identifizierbare Peaks beobachtet, deren Charakteristik sowohl vom Verunreinigungsgehalt des Materials als auch von seiner Wärmebehandlung abhängt. Die Ergebnisse werden mit Hinblick auf verschiedene Modelle zur Erklärung des Effekts diskutiert. Man kommt zu dem Schluß, daß die hier beobachteten Peaks abnorme Snoek-Peaks sind.


On a mesuré les variations de l'absorption des ondes ultrasoniques longitudinales en fonction de la température, dans l'acier, entre 3,0 et 9,0 MHz. On a observé et identifié des pics dont les caractéristiques dépendent de la teneur de l'acier en impuretés ainsi que du traitement thermique subi par l'échantillon. Les résultats sont discutés par rapport aux modèles pouvant les expliquer et on en conclut que les pics observés ont le type des pics anormaux de Snoek.
