Intensity Discrimination of Band-Noise Signals as a Function of their Durations and Bandwidths

The difference limen for intensity of the short band-noise stimuli as a function of their durations were determined experimentally within a large range of the signal duration. The bandwidth of the noise signals have been equal to that of one and three auditory critical bands centred at the frequencies 250, 1000 and 4000 Hz. The effect of the sound intensity level on the difference limen (DL) for intensity (DLI) has been determined as well. It is shown that the DLI for three-criticalband noise signals centred at 250 and 4000 Hz is slightly larger than that for the one-critical-band signals. The dependence of the stimuli centred at 1000 Hz does not exhibit such a regularity. The dependence of DLI upon the signal duration shows the usual duration effect which can be accounted for by the increase of the number of degrees of freedom in the noise process due to its shortening.
