An investigation of the sound absorption coefficient for a plane wave at oblique incidence has been carried out using a pulse method in a flat room. The experiments are in good agreement with calculations in the case of porous absorbing materials and of foil facings in front of porous materials. Measurements with resonance absorbers agree only qualitatively with the theory. The absorption coefficient of resonance absorbers with partitioned air space between the facing and the backwall is found to be higher than expected in the frequency range above the resonance frequency. This can be explained by the existence of waves parallel to the surface in the air layer behind the facings causing parallel resonances, especially in the case of low damped resonators, and leading possibly to absorption coefficients increasing with increasing angle of incidence. The energy losses are primarily caused by frictional losses, which cannot be predicted quantitatively and which are much dependent in an uncalculable way on the method of mounting the facings and vibrating foils. Arrangements of wedges show an increase of the reflection coefficient towards large angles of incidence, which can be reduced by suitable orientation of the surface of the wedges with respect to the incident wave.
