Antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties of Melastoma malabathricum leaves aqueous extract in experimental animals

The present study was carried out to establish the antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties of the aqueous extract of Melastoma malabathricum leaves in experimental animals. The antinociceptive activity was measured using abdominal constriction, hot-plate, and formalin tests, whereas the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities were measured using carrageenan-induced paw edema and brewer’s yeast-induced pyrexia tests, respectively. The extract, which was obtained after soaking the air-dried leaves in distilled water for 72 h and then preparing in concentrations of 10%, 50%, and 100% (v/v), was administered subcutaneously 30min prior to subjection to the above mentioned assays. At all concentrations tested, the extract was found to exhibit significant (P< 0.05) antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities in a concentration-independent manner. Our findings that the aqueous extract of M. malabathricum possesses antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities supports previous claims on its traditional uses to treat various ailments.

La présente étude a eu pur but d’établir les propriété antinociceptives, anti-inflammatoires et antipyrétiques d’un extrait aqueux de feuilles du Melastoma malabathricum chez des animaux expérimentaux. On a mesuré l’activité antinociceptive en utilisant les tests de la constriction abdominale, de la plaque chaude et de la formaline, et les activités anti-inflammatoires et antipyrétiques en utilisant les tests de l’oedème de la patte induit par le carraghénane et de la pyrexie provoquée par la levure de bière, respectivement. L’extrait, obtenu après trempage des feuilles séchées à l’air, pendant 72h, dans de l’eau distillée, puis préparé en concentrations de 10 %, 50 % et 100 %, a été administré par voie sous-cutanée 30min avant la soumission aux tests indiqués ci-dessus. L’extrait a présenté des activités antinociceptives, anti-inflammatoires et antipyrétiques importantes (P< 0,05) à toutes les concentrations utilisées. Cette observation sur les activités antinociceptives, anti-inflammatoires et antipyrétiques de l’extrait aqueux de M. malabathricum vient conforter les arguments antérieurs sur son utilisation traditionnelle pour traiter divers malaises.
