Validation of a high performance liquid chromatography method for sunscreen determination in cosmetics

Synopsis The aim of this research was the development and validation of a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the simultaneous and quantitative determination of benzophenone-3, octyl methoxycinnamate and octyl salicylate contained in sunscreen emulsions. The separation and quantitative determination was achieved using a LiChrospher 100 RP-18 (5 µm) Merck column, a mobile phase constituted of methanol/water (85/15, v/v), a flow-rate of 1.0 mL min and UV detection at 310 nm. The correlation coefficients and percentage of recovery for benzophenone-3, octyl methoxycinnamate and octyl salicylate were 0.9999 and 99.46%; 0.9995 and 98.85%; 0.9998 and 98.84%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) for commercial samples were between 0.50 and 0.70%.


L'objectif du présent travail était le développement et la validation d'une méthode HPLC en vue de la détermination simultanée des benzophénone-3, octyl methoxycinnamate et de l'octyl salicylate présents dans des émulsions de protection solaire cutanée. La séparation et la determination quantitative étaient accomplies en utilisant une colonne phase inverse, LiChrospher® 100 RP-18 (5 µm) Merck, une phase mobile constituée par un mélange Méthanol/Eau (85/15, v/v), un débit de 1.0 mL min−1. et détection UV à 310 nm. Les coefficients de corrélation et le pourcentage de récupération étaient, pour la benzophénone-3, l'octyl methoxycinnamate et l'octyl salicylate respectivement de 0.9999 et 99.46%; 0.9995 et 98.85%; 0,9998 et 98.84%. Les déviations des relatives standards obtenues pour des échantillons commerciaux étaient comprises entre 0.50 et 0.70%.
