Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud., though native to China first came to the attention of Western explorers and naturalists in Japan. It is of cultural importance both in mainland Asia and also in Japan. We describe the early Western encounters with Paulownia tomentosa highlighting in particular a lineage of early illustrations made in Japan and Europe between the mid‐1820s and 1878 that reflect the fusion of Japanese art and Western science.
