644. MERTENSIA MARITIMA: Boraginaceae
Summary.
The Mertensia maritima aggregate is discussed, with the primary focus on M. maritima (L.) Gray sensu stricto which is illustrated and described. Its highly specialised habitat is examined and some unusual physical adaptations noted, together with its history, occurrence in ethnobotanical records, and reported performance in cultivation. Some problems encountered in attempting to clarify the nomenclature and taxonomy of the aggregate are discussed, notably those concerning the segregates M. maritima subsp. asiatica Takeda, and Mertensia simplicissima G.Don.
