It is a great pleasure to contribute to this volume honouring Daryl Daley for his noteworthy contributions to Statistics, especially his ingenious, multifaceted research. Our contribution lies in a small corner of the general area of point process theory so dear to his heart, thereby paying at least lip service to the Editors’ desire for connections between our topics and Daryl's own interests. We take a long look back for perspective on current activity, and we look forward to continued strong viability of the field — and to continued signal contributions by Daryl Daley in many more years of significant research production.

It is a privilege to pay tribute to Daryl, not just as a statistician or for his prowess in diverse areas, from Organist Supreme, to skilled carpenter and Master Chef. We especially value his generous, kindly and gentle nature and above all his lasting friendship.
