Dispersion of guided waves in viscous liquid-filled pipes

This paper describes an investigation of the dispersion of the ultrasonic guided waves in pipes flled with viscous liquid. The group velocities of guided waves were analysed using the pulse-echo method. The infuence of different parameters such as inner-radius-thickness ratio (r/d), propagation distance and fd on the wave-packet amplitude of lower order guided waves is presented in this paper by simulation and experiment. The normal beam transducers were used to excite and receive the desired guided wave modes. The transducer was placed at the end of the pipes in experiments. The results have shown that the fd cut-off of the guided wave modes reduces with the increase of r/d. When r/d is small, any change of r/d has a great infuence on the dispersive characteristics of lower guided waves, but with the increase of r/d and fd, the infuence of r/d on guided waves will be reduced. The infuence of r/d on guided waves will also be reduced with the increase of the order of guided waves. The experimental observation agrees well with the theoretical prediction.

Affiliations: 1 Dr Dean Ta was born in China in October 1972. He received BS, MS and PhD degrees from the Department of Acoustics in Shaanxi Normal University and Tongji University, China in 1996, 1999 and 2002, respectively. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Fudan University from 2004 to 2006. Now, he is an Associate Professor at Fudan University. His research interests include generation and propagation of ultrasonic waves and their applications in NDE&E, signal processing and numerical technique in ultrasound. He has published about 50 papers.
