British Herpetological Society

The British Herpetological Society was established in 1947 for amateur and professional herpetologists alike. With a membership of over 800 individuals and institutions worldwide, the BHS now enjoys international status and is one of the premier societies in its field. The BHS has a well-organised range of committees. These include captive breeding, conservation, education and research. The Captive Breeding Committee promotes responsible animal husbandry and publishes information sheets, scientific articles and books, provides a telephone and email help service and advises the government and other organisations on animal welfare, trade, husbandry and legislation. The Conservation Committee was formed in 1969. Since then the Committee has worked hard to protect British reptile and amphibian species through field work and land purchase and has provided support to international conservation projects. The Education Committee works with the younger BHS members (under 18's). This Committee's role is vital to the future of conservation as it helps to develop children's interest in herpetology and encourages them to become more involved with related projects. The Research Committee helps to support students working on Bsc herpetological projects through its Student Grant Scheme. This scheme was launched in May 2004 and provided 5 grants in its first year. The Research Committee also organises scientific meetings on a range of herpetological issues. BHS members enjoy a range of meetings and gatherings organised by the Society free of charge, in addition to receiving three regular publications; the Herpetological Journal (4 issues per year) the Herpetological Bulletin (4 issues per year) and the NatterJack, our lively and informative monthly newsletter.
