Effect of Short Copper-Coated Carbon Fibers on Stabilization of Al Foams Made by Powder Metallurgy Route
Short copper-coated carbon fibers (Cf) contained the content of 0.7 vol.% were dispersed uniformly into foamable precursors. The scanner at the resolution of 600 dpi, SEM, and EDX were used to investigate macro and microstructures of foamed samples. Stabilization mechanism for addition of short Cf was explained by the drainage model for liquid metal foams. The results show foams stability are improved due to short Cf. Element Cu is distributed homogeneously and CuAl2 phase are not observed. The rate of cell wall thinning and is reduced effectively due to increase of the melt viscosity of Al with short Cf. Short Cf are a good ex situ stabilizer for PM foams.
