Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide Promoted Size-Tuning Synthesis of Rod-Like V2O5 Nanoparticles and Their Catalytic Studies in Oxidative Esterification of Aldehydes

Highly efficient different sized heterogeneous V2O5 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized employing CTAB promoted size controlled mechanism via a highly scalable hydrothermal procedure followed by calcination. The composition, structure and morphology of the as prepared V2O5 nanoparticles were characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transmission Infra-Red Spectrum (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found interestingly that the size of the nanoparticles solely depend on the varying amount of the surfactant (CTAB) used. XRD patterns revealed formation of orthorhombic face centered V2O5 NPs and TEM images showed some rod like particles (orthorhombic) of sizes 20–45 nm. This thermally treated material was tested as a catalyst for the oxidative esterification of aldehydes to their corresponding esters and exhibited highly efficient catalytic activity. Moreover, the as-prepared nano-catalyst showed excellent activity even after five cycles of re-use.
