Phytochemical and Antimicrobial Studies of Saffron and Its Essential Oil
Saffron is used traditionally as a flavoring or coloring agent. However, recent research has proved its potential to promote health (Crocus sativus, L.). Steam distillation process can be used to achieve Isolation of the volatile components in saffron stigma. Phytochemical screening
was performed using standard procedures. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy reveals chemical constituents of its volatile oil include, aglycone of picrocrocin, crocetin and safranal which have all proven health promoting properties. Saffron also has a potential in preventing cancer because
of its antioxidant properties. The present study focuses on the components that are significant in the treatment of each disorder as well as the mechanisms. Several studies were made by using purified forms of the constituents on animal membranes. Saffron extract, essential oil of saffron
before and after radiation) were tested against Staphylococcus aureus on. The results proved that saffron and its oil are beneficial to human health, having the potential to be used for medical purpose.
